Indian Philosophy: Nadis

The 114 junction points, widely known as chakras, are formed directly by the intersections of the 72,000 nadis across your subtle body.

Think of your nadis as a massive electrical grid or highway network. The 114 chakras are the power substations or major traffic confluences where these energy channels cross paths.

The Geometric Formation

When the nadis intersect, they do not just cross randomly; they converge to form triangular vortexes of energy. They are called “chakras” (meaning wheels or circles) because of the spinning movement of prāna as it passes through these junctions, but their foundational energetic structure is a triangle.

Distribution of the 114 Junctions

The system is divided based on physical location and energetic hierarchy:

  • 112 Internal Junctions: These reside physically within the subtle body, distributed all the way from the soles of your feet up to the crown of your head.
  • 2 External Junctions: These exist outside the boundaries of the physical body, hovering above the crown chakra, opening up to transpersonal dimensions of consciousness.

Hierarchical Breakdown

72,000 Nadis > Converge into > 114 Chakras/Junctions

The 114 junctions are sorted into three tiers based on how many nadis intersect at that specific point:

  1. 7 Major Chakras: The primary hubs located along the spine where the three ultimate channels (Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna) intertwine. They govern your main endocrine glands, organs, and psychological states.
  2. 21 Minor Chakras: Medium-sized junctions where fewer nadis meet. These are located at your major physical joints (knees, hips, shoulders), the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, and the tongue.
  3. 86 Micro Chakras: Smaller, highly localized intersections scattered across the entire body framework, mapping closely to nerve clusters and bio-magnetic points.

The Function: Purification & Flow

The primary function of this intersection network is to purify and distribute energy signals to and from your brain and organs.
